DogFest, Service Dog, Dog

You’ve probably heard “Give a dog a bone” from the childhood song This Old Man. As an idiom, it means someone who refuses to stop talking or thinking about something, like the old man playing knick-knack in the children’s song.

Canine Companions, one of Rosen Hotels & Resorts’ long-time community service partners, understand there are special dogs who have this knack for relentlessly thinking about work. This nonprofit organization knows these dogs love to serve our special needs humans—because they’ve been happily trained to never stop wanting to help. Bred and born for the job, service dogs complete many hours of specialized training and temperament tests. Only top dogs graduate and then are assigned—for free—to a person with disabilities who needs a little extra help to achieve greater independence. This is where DogFest runs in to fetch support.

DogFest 2020

Part festival and part fundraiser, Canine Companions invites everyone to DogFest on May 16 in Central Park in Winter Park. The family- and dog-friendly fundraising festival shows off its top service dogs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate the bond we have with dogs and to raise funds for the next team of dogs going to service dog school.

Admission is free. Fundraising is highly encouraged but not necessary. Come out and hear from professional dog trainers, watch dog demonstrations, enjoy live music and good food, and tons of fun for the dogs and family. There will be a lot of service dogs there, so please be mindful that these dogs are on duty assisting their owners. It’s good behavior from us humans to not approach or pet service dogs. It is ok to approach their human companions to talk directly with them.

Canine Companion Facts

  • The organization is currently raising and training 1,160 puppies to become service dogs.
  • Since Canine Companion started in 1975, it has graduated 6,391 teams of dogs.
  • There are 2,553 active service teams nationwide.
  • Dogs that graduate from Canine Companion’s training schools also go on to serve in other roles where dogs use their talents to search for bombs, aid customs and border patrol agents, as well as serve as therapy and guide dogs.

Pet-Friendly Hotel

As a company, we care deeply about our beloved animal companions and host several fundraising events yearly to support nonprofit animal welfare organizations. We also know it’s important to spend time with our animal companions. That’s why all of our hotels welcome dogs. Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando, a pet-friendly Orlando hotel on International Drive, has special rooms blocked off for guests traveling with dogs. These rooms offer our guests easy access to outdoor walking areas. And our hotel staff knows how to make you and your four-legged travel partner feel most comfortable. Start planning your next Orlando vacation with your pup by clicking on Check Room Availability in the upper right corner of this page. We hope to see you both soon!

Please be courtesy to all hotel guests and staff by safely crating or removing your pet(s) from your guestroom during housekeeping service.

The special “Pet in Room” door hanger sign, provided at check-in, is for your human pal to hang on your guestroom door for the duration of your stay. This is to let all guests know that we are celebrating your stay with us!
