Summers in the Sunshine State are known for their sweltering heat and humidity. Without taking the proper precautions, these conditions can lead to overheating and dehydration. Our favorite way to beat the heat is ice cream. This sweet treat is the perfect excuse to step inside for a bit and take a break from the sun while you cool off. You can find ice cream nearly anywhere in Orlando but for the crème de la crème we recommend these local favorites.
Ginther’s Swirls Ice Cream
Ginther’s gets the “Swirls” in its name from the towering, Instagram-worthy soft-serve swirls that help keep you cool on a hot summer day. The various dips, flavorings, sprinkles, and other toppings make each cone different from the last, giving you every excuse to go back and try a new combination. Ginther’s also offers hand-scooped ice cream, milkshakes, malts, sundaes, and floats.
Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream
You can taste the care and passion that goes into this ice cream from your first taste to the last. The eponymous Kelly started her ice cream journey working part-time at a local shop to help pay her way through nursing school. Eventually, she purchased a commercial ice cream maker and started making and selling it herself in an iconic pink and white food truck. The ice cream was a hit, and in 2015, Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream opened their first brick-and-mortar store.
The Soda Fountain
This place simply isn’t a nod to childhood sweets shop nostalgia. Ask about their adult milkshake menu, AKA “the blacklist,” which features liqueur-infused milkshakes that will make any adult’s inner kid smile. Moreover, the Soda Fountain satisfies every sweet tooth craving needed on a summer day: ice cream, milkshakes, floats, and sundaes in nearly every flavor you might want.
Honorable Mention: Jeremiah’s Italian Ice
Sure, it’s technically not ice cream, but Jeremiah’s Italian Ice absolutely deserves a place on this list. They offer a wide variety of Italian ice flavors, which you can combine with chocolate or vanilla soft serve for a mouthwatering experience. Since it first opened in Winter Park in 1996, Jeremiah’s has expanded to 22 stores around the state.
