December Rocket Launches

Have you ever felt and heard the raw power of a rocket launch? Florida’s relatively flat landscape makes it easy to see a rocket launch from most parts of the state, but nothing compares with being a few miles from the launch pad. Orlando has several major roadways heading out to the space coast making a day trip super easy. Couple easy travel with December’s low humidity and relatively clear skies, and this time of year provides the greatest window for space launches. Check out the liftoffs listed below for the December/Late 2018 timeframe. These should definitely be on your radar!

SpaceX Falcon 9 – GPS 3-01

December 2018

The GPS III satellite program represents a new generation of GPS and communication satellites being launched by SpaceX on their Falcon 9 rocket. The program has been hampered by myriad delays, having originally been planned for a start back in April 2014. Fortunately, Elon Musk and co. appear to be back on track and the latest news puts the schedule on pace for a December launch.

Delta 4 – WGS 10

December 13, 2018

This flight of a United Launch Alliance Delta 4 rocket is slated to carry a Wideband Global SATCOM spacecraft up to geostationary orbit in service of the United States military. This spacecraft, built by Boeing, was previously known as the Wideband Gapfiller Satellite. It is the tenth of its kind to be sent to orbit, and will primarily be used by the U.S. military for communications purposes.

SpaceX Falcon Heavy – Arabsat 6A

Late 2018

The Arabsat 6A mission marks the first commercial satellite launch (third overall) for SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket. The first Falcon Heavy liftoff took place earlier this year on February 6, when CEO Elon Musk sent a Tesla Roadster skyward as a payload. The Arabsat 6A was built by Lockheed Martin (who have a facility locally here in Orlando) to provide TV, broadband, and radio services to the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.
