Whether you love the theater or the ballet, holiday shows are a tradition of the season. If while on vacation you find yourself wanting to enjoy a local production of one of the classics you love, Orlando has plenty of options. Each holiday season, Orlando’s talented artists and community members bring to life many shows. If the holidays feel incomplete without a trip to the theater or at least a local production of the Christmas story, check out these three amazing holiday shows in Orlando.
Central Florida Ballet’s “Pyrotechnic Nutcracker”
A holiday classic, the Nutcracker tells the tale of a young girl named Maria who receives an enchanted nutcracker prince as a gift on Christmas Eve. The doll comes to life just in time to save her and once they have defeated their enemies, the Nutcracker, now in his true form as Prince Nikita, takes Maria on a tour of his magical kingdom. Although the story may be familiar, this production includes a few surprises. Taking a cue from the nearby theme parks, the Central Florida Ballet incorporates pyrotechnics, aerial arts, and more for a ballet that is sure to delight all ages. The show takes place at the Orange County Convention Center on December 15-16. You can purchase tickets at the ballet company’s website.
A Christmas Carol at Orlando Shakes
Catch a production of this holiday classic at Orlando’s Shakespeare Theater. Based on Dickens’ ghost tale, this heartwarming production tells the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. Grumpy Scrooge celebrates Christmas with a mere “bah humbug” each year, until one year he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The harsh realities and many opportunities for change revealed by the spirits help Ebenezer mend his ways. The show will run from November 28 – December 30. Check the theater’s website for show times and tickets.
Singing Christmas Trees
Far from being an amateur production, the Singing Christmas Trees have quickly become a local tradition in Central Florida. Sit back and enjoy as a choir sings your favorite Christmas carols from their perches in two 45-foot-tall Christmas trees decorated with 250,000. They are joined by a full orchestra, dancers, actors, and more as they tell the story of the first Christmas. In addition to the show, the event offers the Bethlehem Village, an interactive experience you can enjoy before the shows. Kids will enjoy meeting the animals in the petting zoo and visiting the live nativity as they wait for the show to begin. Get your tickets before they sell out!
