Each year, the National Veterans Wheelchair Games is presented by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Paralyzed Veterans of America. The Games bring together veterans who have suffered from spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, amputations, and other conditions with a goal of building independence, healthy living habits, and improving quality of life through sports and competition.
The location of the Games changes each year. The 2018 games will be held here in Orlando from July 29 through August 4 at a variety of different locations. Even the Orange County Convention Center will house some of the various events.
The Wheelchair Games, the largest annual sport of its kind in the world, attracts over 600 athletes and 4,000 volunteers each year. Since its inception 38 years ago, the Games have produced numerous world-class athletes and champions. The veterans compete in 19 different wheelchair sports ranging from swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, archery, air rifle competition, basketball, boccia, nine ball, rugby, bowling, trapshooting, handcycling, wheelchair slalom racing, power soccer, motorized wheelchair rally, and track and field. Athletes compete in all events against those with similar athletic ability, competitive experience, or age.
For those who have sacrificed for our country, there truly is nothing we can do to fully repay them. Hosting the Veterans Wheelchair Games in 2018 is a great honor for our city, and we are excited to see each and every athlete compete.
